Goals vs. Systems
All about achieving goals and implementing systems
The author of Dilbert comics (Scott Adams) wrote a cool book - How to fail at everything and still win big, and one of the things that he talks about is about setting systems vs goals. It was interesting for me to dig deep into this concept - what is a system and what is a goal? Losing 10 pounds (or kgs) is a goal, working out every day is a system. Setting up good systems in our life (like writing a journal entry every day, or meditating, or working out, or eating right, studying hard), helps us achieve our goals (losing weight, inner peace, heathy body, good job).
Do we start with goals or systems? A system without a goal sounds like mindless drudgery (keep working out every day? to what end? What am I trying to do anyway?), but goals without systems leave us empty when the goal is achieved (I lost 20 pounds in a year, now what do I do?)
Today I want to focus on setting a combination of a system and a goal. What is the goal that you want to achieve? What system do you want to follow to achieve the goal? Let’s keep the goal and system small - like something we can do in a week, and we can circle back with stories of what goal we achieved, and what system we set into place?
My goal is to get back into writing again (I took a 2 yrs hiatus) and I want to start with a goal of having one post a day for 1 week. I want to write online and offline every day for one week.
What are your goals? What systems will you implement to achieve your goals? I would love to hear your stories in the comment section of this post!
